Importance of Electrical Load Assessment for Buildings in Nigeria

Reliable electrical systems do not begin with cables or circuit breakers. They begin with an accurate load assessment. For homes, offices and industrial facilities in Nigeria, a proper load assessment is the first step to a safe and efficient installation.

Many electrical problems we are called to fix, from cables overheating to breakers that trip every evening, happen because a system was installed without a proper look at power demand. When the load is assessed first, the system can be designed to work as intended.

What is an electrical load assessment?

An electrical load assessment calculates the total electrical demand of a building. The engineer lists all lighting, sockets, air conditioners, pumps, lifts and machines, then works out how much power the building really needs.

    The assessment tells you:

    • The total power demand of the building
    • The right cable sizes and breaker ratings
    • The right transformer size, if you take supply at 11 kV or 33 kV
    • The right standby generator size and changeover arrangement

    Why load assessment matters

    It prevents overload

When too many loads run on undersized circuits, cables overheat and breakers trip. Calculating capacity before installation stops this from the start.

It improves efficiency and equipment life

Transformers, cables and breakers that run within their ratings waste less energy and last longer.

It gets generator and changeover sizing right

Most Nigerian businesses rely on a generator when grid supply fails. An oversized generator wastes diesel. An undersized one trips or runs hot. A load assessment shows which loads must run on the generator, and sizes the generator and the changeover switch or ATS panel to match.

    It improves safety

Overloaded cables, undersized breakers and poor distribution are common causes of electrical fires. A proper assessment removes these risks before they are built in.

What engineers look at during a load assessment

    • Connected load: the total rated power of all equipment in the building.
    • Demand factor: not everything runs at once, so engineers estimate the realistic peak.
    • Future expansion: spare capacity for equipment the building will add later.
    • Phase balance: spreading single-phase loads evenly across the three phases keeps voltage stable and reduces neutral current.
    • Voltage drop: long cable runs need larger cables to keep voltage within limits. Read more in our guide to voltage drop in electrical installations.

When should you carry out a load assessment?

    • Before a new building is wired
    • Before installing or upgrading a transformer or generator
    • Before adding large equipment such as air conditioning, lifts or production machines
    • When breakers trip often or cables run hot
    • Before expanding a commercial or industrial facility

    Conclusion

A load assessment is one of the most important steps in electrical design. Without it, systems suffer overload, waste energy and create safety risks. With it, your installation runs safely and reliably for years.
