Home / Blog Posts / Tips for Reducing Electricity Bills: Smart Ways to Save Energy
Electricity is one of the biggest running costs for Nigerian homes and businesses. Between grid tariffs and diesel for the generator, many facilities spend far more than they need to. The good news is that much of the waste is electrical, and it can be fixed. Here are practical ways to cut your electricity bill, starting with the biggest savings for businesses.
Factories and large commercial buildings with motors, pumps and air-conditioning plant often run at a poor power factor. That means the supply carries more current than the useful work needs, so cables run hotter, transformers are loaded more heavily and generators burn more fuel for the same output. Where your supply contract penalises low power factor, it also shows up directly on the bill. A correctly sized power factor correction (PFC) panel reduces the wasted current. Have an engineer measure your power factor before buying capacitors, because wrongly sized capacitor banks can cause harmonic problems.
In many buildings, single-phase loads have been added over the years without thought for phase balance. One phase ends up heavily loaded while the others are light. This causes voltage problems, extra neutral current and wasted energy. A load survey and rebalancing at the distribution board is a low-cost fix.
A generator that is much larger than the load burns fuel inefficiently. One that is too small runs hot and fails early. Match the generator to the essential load, and use a changeover switch or ATS panel so only the circuits that must run are connected during an outage. Read why sizing matters in our post on electrical load assessment for buildings in Nigeria.
LED lamps use a fraction of the energy of incandescent and halogen lamps, and last much longer. For warehouses and factories, LED high-bay fittings cut both the energy bill and the cost of replacing failed lamps at height.
Air conditioning is often the largest single load in Nigerian offices and homes. Set thermostats to a sensible temperature rather than the lowest setting, keep doors and windows closed while units run, service filters and coils regularly, and use timers so units are not left on in empty rooms overnight.
When replacing refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and pumps, choose efficient models such as inverter-type air conditioners. They cost more to buy but use less energy every day they run.
Equipment left on standby, and machines left idling between shifts, quietly add to the bill. Switch off at the socket or use switched extension boards, and give someone the job of shutting down non-essential equipment at the end of each day.
Motion-sensor lighting in corridors, toilets and stores, and timers on outdoor lighting, stop lights from running when nobody needs them.
Loose terminations, damaged cables and failing equipment waste energy as heat, and are a fire risk. A thermal imaging survey finds these hot spots before they fail.
Lower electricity bills come from a mix of good habits and good engineering. For businesses, the biggest savings usually come from power factor correction, phase balance and correct generator sizing, so start with a measured survey of how your installation actually runs.
